Anseong Hanggyo 안성 향교

We finally found it! We found the school! Anseong Hanggyo was a provincial, government-run school used to instill Confucianism. According to one of the few websites about this place in English, "It is believed to have been established in the 27th year of Chungjong, the eleventh king of the Chosun Dynasty." That's 1532.

Several buildings make up the school site, but it is still very small. We later passd some high-rise apartments that were built on the site of the school, several blocks away from this site. But the remaining structures take up very little space and it's not exactly a tourist destination. So we were surprised to find some ajummas, ajosshis and halmonis and halabojis at the structure. Turns out we'd shown up on Confucius' birthday, September 28th, 551 BCE. (It was October 5th when we were there, but there may have been some lunar calendar fun going on.)

"Kan" (칸) is a an old measure used for buildings. This building is five kans wide. A kan is the distance between building posts.
