Love motels are so called because you can get rooms for short periods (a few hours) so they're often used by adulterers. Since most Koreans live at home until they're married, they're also used by young (twenties) couples who want privacy. (Younger couples, high-school aged, go to DVD bangs.) You can check into love motels without seeing the clerk sometimes, and the ropes are there to hide your face. Screens are often used to hide license plates, too. Despite the name, love motels don't feel seedy. They are pretty inexpensive if you can wait late enough to check in for the night, so people use them for regular purposes, too. (A lot of new teachers in Korea are stuck in them for a few days while their apartments are getting ready.)
