The city of San Carlos was steep, hilly, compact, and not very touristed. (So much so that when I got on the bus from San Jose the driver asked me 3 times if I was sure I wanted to go to San Carlos. Finally I said, "Si, Ciudad Quesada, San Carlos, si. Nada La Fortuna.") The center of town was about 9 square blocks and very busy. The surrounding area was made up most of ranches.
