Tae Kwon Do Just Didn't Jive Today

Yesterday's class was great.

I don't usually go to class on Tuesdays, but class has been so good lately that I decided to go today, too. I told Master yesterday to avoid a lot of questions I couldn't well answer. Proud, proud me, I managed to spit out a whole Korean sentence and it was right!

As for coming Tuesdays, let me not make that mistake again.

Many of the older folks weren't there, including Cocky Guy, so the whole dynamic was off. We ran for the first 20 mins of class (ugh) and for the last half of the class, the Brother Studio (I found out the Masters are brothers) came over and we did large groups target practice and freesparring.

I'm working on a new form, 태극오장 (Tae Guek Oh Chang). It's a form that I have loved watching since I saw it done in tests at my last studio. I think it's a gorgeous form with some amazing technical work in it.

Unfortunately, that technical work is killing me. There are three major aspects to the form that I just don't get and one minor aspect that's part of a major aspect. Master was working with me for about 40 minutes while his brother took care of the rest of the class, but I just couldn't get it. I would get it right maybe three out of every ten times. Forms are supposed to be work, they're supposed to grow with you, but this one is just out of control.

At the end of class I asked if Pyeong Ju was still coming to the studio. I conjugated the verb I learned in order to talk with him yesterday correctly—in my head, without any books!—and it was right! Wha hoo!

I am glad I went, but it was such an off day...

An American educator moves to Korea, presumably to teach English. Instead she discovers that learning Korean one taekwondo class at a time is a more captivating activity.
