One in One Hundred

I had an exhausting (but good) day with Heidi and some of her friends.

We were in the major theater area around the Hyehwa Station. This was a thriving area that I'd like to explore more. At one point we (Heidi, Clair and I) stopped to watch a comedian. It was getting dark, the crowd was large, and we were standing on the outskirts. We had barely staked out our spot, with me standing in the middle, when he said, "HI!"

I looked around with everyone else to see who he was yelling at until I realized that everyone was looking at...me. I said, "Hi!"

"How are you?"

I turned so red. How in the world did he so quickly spot me in this crowd of at least 100 people? I'm with two Koreans, not two other foreigners! Heidi and Clair were giggling maniacally and I was just horrified. "I'm good!"

"Where are you from?"

I was tempted to answer this in Korean since I just learned it last night but I was afraid that might make things worse. "America."

"America, of course. What do you do?"

"I'm a teacher. But a real one! I taught for three years in America." A bunch of people laughed.

He said, "Do you like Korea?"

"Yes!"

"Do you like Korean food?"

I paused and decided the best way to answer was, "Yes!"

He said something in Korean about me being so agreeable and then said, "Enjoy your stay in Korea!"

"Thank you!"

Welcome to Korea, Minnesota Girl. (Today is three months exactly since I've been here. And yet I'm still not used to being 1 in 100.)

I'm so white I glow at night.

AND throw off the flash on cameras when I'm in the photo with other Koreans.

AND that's with my tan. When people see my watchband line, they really flip.

Well, it's better than being pointed at while someone yells "Foreigner, foreigner!".

Seriously...I'm wondering how many thousands of times you will have to answer that same set of questions while you are in Korea???

I don't know how many times I'll get the EXACT SAME SET of questions. I must say, I'm amazed he didn't tell me that Korea has four seasons.

An American educator moves to Korea, presumably to teach English. Instead she discovers that learning Korean one taekwondo class at a time is a more captivating activity.
