Clueless but Doing Push-Ups

I've been very sick, so I haven't been to work. I was sick Friday, so sick that my boss felt my head and said I needed to go to the hospital. Yet when I gave that boss the note I'd found on my door Thursday night, she didn't feel the need to tell me that I was going to be in an apartment without gas or electricity while I was sick over the weekend. Nice, eh?

So, the long and short of it is that I haven't been to work. How would I go to work even if I weren't sick, seeing as how I've been evicted without any apology? Neither of my bosses are answering or returning phone calls though yesterday they promised they'd fix everything. Nothing is fixed.

I haven't been to taekwondo since last Wednesday, but I have been doing my push-ups.

I've been looking for a job, but all public schools are full.

Not sure of my next step.

I have not been there in many years, but maybe check in at Yonsei in Shinchon, at the International program, they used to have postings at the office for people interested in teaching English.
Hope you feel better,

Hi,

Hope things work out soon. I don't know if its the right place to look but I saw English teaching jobs under 'education' on the Seoul craigslist.

Thanks, folks. But it's not an issue of finding ANY job. Those are a won a dozen. I could walk out my front door, walk for 10 mins and find a job. It's a matter of finding the RIGHT job in the RIGHT area. That may take time.

You can not imagine how huge English teaching is in this country.

Ugh. What a bad time to be sick. Feel better! I hope something works out soon so you know what to do next. I'm thinking of you!

Hey Amanda, I've been reading your blog for a while now, and I've never commented before.... Sorry about your apt situation--being korean (albeit born-in-US-korean) it shames me that your bosses are so shady about this stuff.. I've been considering teaching english over there, but your experience is not very encouraging...

Not knowing the full extent of your contract and how things "really" operate there, is this something you can take to the American Embassy and get help from them? Or is it out of their jurisdiction? Maybe they can at least give you an idea of what your next step should be?

I know it doesn't help anything, but I'm sorry you're sick on top of all of this - that sucks! I really hope you feel better soon!

Katie, no, the American Embassy refuses to have anything to do with matters like these.

Jon, while shady stuff happens at almost any hogwon, this is utterly unusual. However, you should know that as a Korean, it would be harder, though not impossible, for you to find a job. Parents really like seeing white faces.

I've been reading your blog for a while but I've never commented before. I really enjoy your blog & you are one of few ex-pats in Korea with the right attitude, trying to learn without preconceived notion of how all things should work. I’m sorry to hear how your employer treated you but things should work out.

Be well & go out & find your self a great job!

Mat, no, no pay yet. They promise I will get paid. Hmm.

Dan (and Jon), can I ask how you found me? Believe me, I have my own opinions as to how things should work in Korea, in the US, in the world in general. But if I wanted everything to be just like home, I'd be home.

I can always leave!!

hmmm indeed.

There have been instances of domestic violence for less around here. :-S

Damn, that's crazy. I guess the next step is figuring out what you WANT...

Hey Amanda... I followed a link from the Daily Kimchi, another blog I read... I liked that although you teach english (or at least try to when your bosses aren't jerking you around, but I digress) your blog is more about your experiences w/ taekwondo. It's an interesting divergence from other blogs of teachers over there that I've read... Oh yeah, I'm glad that you found another living situation (though it sounds semi-temporary). Keep your chin up, gal, you seem like a strong person and deserve better. I know you've said before that drinking alot (like many hagwon teachers do over there) doesn't interest you that much, so I think it says alot about how crappy your bosses are that recently in you blog you said, "I need soju". Assah!

Ah yes, I know the Daily Kimchi.

Yeah, the "I need soju" thing was said-partly in jest, but also partly-seriously. It wasn't just that I wanted soju, which I did, it was also that I wanted to talk to Master a bit more outside of the studio. I'm glad I got to.

As for these bosses jerking me around...I just want a good job.

Of course, then a friend teases me, "Once your job is great, it's your love life that will become a mess. Watch out..." ^^

An American educator moves to Korea, presumably to teach English. Instead she discovers that learning Korean one taekwondo class at a time is a more captivating activity.
