Western Me/Eastern Me

Doctors

Western Amanda

"Amanda, would you consider something like acupuncture?"

"Only as a last resort."

Eastern Amanda

"Master, my shoulder hurts. Should I go to a traditional doctor? There's one near my house." (How do I know this? I saw his sign and thought, If I ever need 부항 again, I can go there.)

"Yes, three days."

"OK."

Colds

Western Amanda

At Walgreens, "I have a cold, I want some OJ, some cough drops, Vicks, and sleep."

Eastern Amanda

At the acupuncturist, "I have a cold."

I am handed a packet of I-don't-know-what brown-colored, weird-smelling powder. "How do I take this?" I ask in Korean.

"With water. Take this with each meal."

And I do.

Meeting People

Western Amanda

"So, where are you from?"

Eastern Amanda

"How old are you?"

Do you tell people how old you are?

Since my students are not very fond of math, I give them my current age in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. At first, they were rather confused by it, but now they do battle to see who can come up with the correct answer first. It also helps them learn large English numbers (thousands, hundred thousands, and millions). Winners cannot use calculators or cell/mobile/hand phones.

I guess that means you don't have to do anything to account for the different way of counting age somehow?

I do tell people how old I am. In fact, I meant that it's often one of MY first questions when meeting people.

In America, I used to lie to my students all the time about my age. My first year teaching, I turned 23 within two months of school starting. I used to say I was 44. But slowly, over a matter of weeks, I dropped hints.

"I'm in my 20s."

"I'm an odd age."

"I'm on the bright side of my 20s." (As opposed to the dark side, which I am on now!)

"I'm a prime number."

It was the last clue that made one students literally jump in the air and shout "YOU ARE 23!"

Years later, I was on a date with a guy. I didn't know his age. "Are you an odd number?"

"Yes."

"Are you a prime number?"

"No."

"Are you a square number?"

"No."

"Are you a cube number?"

"I am a cube number."

"Twenty-seven."

"I've never had anyone figure out my age that way before."

I found out a little later that he was earning his PhD in aerospace engineering. If there were ever a date to be a total geek on, that was it.

An American educator moves to Korea, presumably to teach English. Instead she discovers that learning Korean one taekwondo class at a time is a more captivating activity.
