Whining

Most Korean women, especially young women up to about the age of 35, have this whine in their voice. Also, Korean women call their older boyfriends "오빠/oppa/big brother" as a nickname. These two factors come together prominently when they're talking to their boyfriends in public.

Like on the subway.

"Big Brother! [whine] I'm tired! Big Brother! [whine] I'm hungry. Big Brother! [whine] Pay attention to me!"

It makes me feel very sorry for their boyfriends and I don't know why they put up with it.

With that information...

A Few Days Ago, People Watching

Me: Oh, isn't that cute. The girl on the stairs is whining at her boyfriend.

Good Man: What do you mean?

Me: 오빠!

Good Man, head drops to his chest and he shakes it slowly: You did that very well.

I promised I'd never do it again.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the
whining. My (Korean)fiance used to dump women women who did that because he hates it
so much.

I do it sometimes when I am in a
mischevious mood...apparently I get the
tone just right. However, he enjoys me
calling him Obba, as long as I don't
whine.

Well he's actually a year younger than me, and I HATE 누나 with a passion due to the boys in taekwondo constantly whining it. So I'll stick with his name. (Actually, when we first met he said I could use his English name. I've never used it, just like I never use my Korean name. A few days ago I mentioned his English name and he said, "No, use my name." Exactly as I want it.)

Thanks for the comment. I'm going to add your blog to my list, if you don't mind. Congrats on the engagement.

An American educator moves to Korea, presumably to teach English. Instead she discovers that learning Korean one taekwondo class at a time is a more captivating activity.
