They also have feet pointing out that people should walk up the left side of the stairs. According to the gov't, walking on the left side is a leftover from the Japanese occupation. Walking consistently on ANY side is not the norm here. In the subway the stairs have arrows on the left side, yet when you cross the street there are also arrows telling you to walk to the right! Since this left side thing is apparently because of the Japanese, the gov't is trying to make it a law to walk on the right side of the street.

No, we're not going to worry about the sex industry or motorbikes ignoring the law and driving on the sidewalk or foreigners having banking rights. No, we're going to worry about how people walk up and down stairs and streets.
