Bad Boyfriend

Rrrr-rr-rr.

"Dammit."

Rrrrrrrrr-rrrr-rr— Silence.

Yesterday I ended up walking to work.

When I got home, I called the towing company that handles our complex's parking lot, because (unknown to me before I had to change a tire!) they provide minor car assistance. The guy came, gave me a jump and asked me how I drive. I told him.

When I came inside, Good Man asked what was wrong.

"It seems that I am like a bad boyfriend."

"How?"

"I just start her and go. I'm ready to go, she should be, too!" Good Man laughed and I said, "I should know better. She's not a p*** star car."

"Are you going to blog about this?" he asked.

I drove Good Man to school and a few hours later, went back to pick him up. The truck was still slow to start. And this morning it was slow to start again. I let him (her?) warm up and everything, but after work? Slow to start.

Maybe I'm not all that terrible...

So I bought a AAA membership and called them. They came over and tested my battery. It was bad, so they replaced and installed a new battery.

My car is pretty reliable, but car stuff freaks me out. I looked at how to install a battery and it was dead easy, but it's cold outside. I don't want to change another damn tire and I don't want to install my own battery. If I'm stuck somewhere, I'll let AAA come and help me out.

And I'll let my truck warm up in the morning.

AAA also gives good discounts on travel-related stuff. Abuse to its full extent :)

And they will come unlock whatever car you happen to be in if someone locks the keys in the car(or in one case my friend locked her dog in the car with the keys, second set of keys in her purse on the floor of car!)The membership goes with you not your car.

I love AAA. They rescued my friend and I when her car broke down at Devil's Tower. The guy had to come from 80 miles away.

Did they by chance tell you how long you're suppose to let the car warm up for? And how cold it has to be outside for this rule to come into effect?

Growing up in California, I never had to do any of this stuff...

Keep your receipt for the AAA car battery. I think their warranty is 3 or 5 years, from my personal exp. and others, the battery doesn't last that long. So keep your receipt when you need to change the battery again...just in case.

FYI mine lasted almost 3 years, but I lost the receipt...u figured they would have some type of info on their system about it, but I needed to prove to them when I purchased/got the battery installed.

Gori, I grew up in Minnesota but didn't learn how to drive/get my license until I lived in Georgia, so I understand. He said two or three minutes, don't know about temperature.

Jin, I scanned both sides of the receipt and kept one copy in my glove box, one in my car file, and an electronic copy on my hard drive. :D

They have free maps of all the states and several cities and will help you trip plan. I have used their services for YEARS!!! They even have umbrellas and Ameribag purses at the larger store in Charlotte.

My wife used to get flat tires all the time, and whenever it happened she called me on the phone and expected me to drive to wherever she was and change tires for her. I got tired of it and joined AAA for both of us two years ago.

As you might have already guessed, she's had absolutely no trouble with her car since then.

Being from Saskatchewan we have some pretty nasty weather. I don't know how cold it is where you are but I'd say the rule is if your windows are frosted, you should let your car warm up until warm air starts coming out of the vents. It is usually about 5 minutes. In really cold weather (-40) we have to plug the car in over night and then start it and warm it up for a while.

If it is an exceptionally cold day, I even recommend warming your car up after it had been stopped for more than a few hours. Your car has just been sitting there for a few hours it needs a little warming up to get it moving again.

Another reason you do this is to give the fluids a chance to move through the car and warm up a little before just starting the car and going. I hope this helps a little.

I haven't seen frost on my windows all year. It hasn't been below 10 degs F all year, either, as far as I know.

I know about heater blocks and plugging cars in from living in MN, but we don't see that weather in DC.

In Virginia/DC, you basically don't need to warm up a car if it's working properly. If you need to charge the battery or you're too cold, 2 minutes in cold weather is ok...but bear in mind the pollution it causes. (my father's an automotive engineer, can you tell!?)

As you know, MN or Winnipeg is a different story...warming up a car there is A-OK!
