(Il)legal Wedding

Me: Hi, I have a marriage license question.

Woman at the Circuit County Clerk's Office: Um-hmm?

Me: My fiancé is a foreign national. Do we need to bring proof that he's in the country legally when we apply for the license?

Woman at the Circuit County Clerk's Office: Nope, just a passport or some sort of photo ID. He can be in the country illegally and you can still marry him.

HA HA!!!
Did they give you anything when you got your marriage license?
Many moons ago when we got our license we had to do a mandatory HIV testing by our county we were also handed a complimentary bag. The bag contained a small box of detergent, a roll of toilet paper, and a box of condoms!!!

Umma, we don't have the license yet. I'll let you know when we do.

Diana, yeah, she said it. All chipper-like, too.

I actually knew it was true that you could marry someone illegally in the country, but considering the BS I had to go through to get a driver's license, I just wanted to make sure that INDEED all we needed was passports.

It makes sense, actually. Screening foreign nationals to see if they're here illegally or not takes time, money, and training, as well as another document the county courthouse has to keep track of. And then if the person IS here illegally but the screening process doesn't get them, he would have another layer of documentation that makes him seem legal.

Gori, would you please tell that to the neighboring counties who are making people prove their children are legal before the school system will enroll them?
