Spam

I bought Spam today.

To eat.

For dinner I made 부대 찌게, which is essentially "army stew." Story has it that it was created during/after the Korean War, and it's essentially a sodium-fest of processed meats, whatever veggies you have on hand, and ramyeon noodles.

Into the pot went red pepper paste, soy sauce, sugar, and minced garlic. I added water and brought it to a boil, then tossed in leeks, onions, scallions, Mother's kimchi, and hot green peppers (from my garden, since I did get a small crop). After a few minutes of cooking, I tossed in turkey Spam, turkey sausages, and tofu. After a few more minutes I added ramyeon, sprouts, enoki mushrooms, and a dash of sesame oil.

I served it with rice, some potato banchan, and an Asian pear for dessert.

After several bites, Good Man said, "This budae jjigae is perfect. If you ever lose your job, you can open budae jjigae restaurant."

I stared at him.

He shrugged, "Yeah, that is a compliment! Only thing I liked in military was budae jjigae, and this is just like that. I want more."

Ha, that's funny, they served 부대찌게 at school for lunch today. Another option if you have any extra spam, spam musabi, a hawaiian/japanese dish which makes spam arguably palatable (glowing recommendation, eh?) Basically thin slice the spam, pan fry it til crispy, (maybe hit it with some jarred bulgogi/teriyaki marinade during the cooking), then make inch wide strips of 김 and form up a little rice mound in your palm, assemble the rice on top of the spam, and wrap that seaweed strip around the middle of the thing. Good with wasabi/soy sauce dipping sauce.

OMG... My husband cooked spam in our 350 sq ft living space a week ago and pregnant, sensory-overloaded, largely-vegetarian me nearly killed him. He still doesn't believe me when I tell him that spam is the lowest quality of all meat possible. Koreans still think it's like filet mignon or something. Ew.

As a side note, 부대찌게 without Spam is rather delicious.

Spam musabi is the best (only) way to eat spam! I love them!

An American educator moves moved to Korea, presumably to teach English. Instead she discovers discovered that learning Korean one taekwondo class at a time is was a more captivating activity.

Somewhere along the way, she met a Good Man, fell in love, and ended up back in the States. Still doing taekwondo, still learning Korean...
