Why I Have Good Man Edit First

The night before last, I talked to Diana about writing in Korean. I said, "I have been told I have 'voice' in English. Now I need to find it in Korean."

Diana (rather correctly) said, "I think writing in Korean is a big enough deal for now."

Last night I had Officer edit my story. She found a gazillion little things that Good Man didn't point out.

Last night I cornered him. "Why didn't you tell me all of those errors?"

"Cause you're not writing a college paper or high school paper. I left it, cause you write Korean like you're learning Korean."

I eyed him suspiciously. "What do you mean?"

"Your paper was correct. You just don't say things like a Korean would. You say things in Korean like an American would."

I've been told that before.

So I guess I've found my voice. By accident.

So, why do I have Good Man edit first? Because when I correct my students' errors, I adjust my level of correction based on their level of English. Because he usually knows exactly what incidents I'm writing about. Because it's less painful to get his dozen corrections than YJ or Officer's 30.
