마다/매

I had another brilliant realization about 날/일 today, this time while studying flashcards on the subway.

English Pure Korean Every Korean (Hanja) Every
day 날마다 일 (日) 매일
week 주 (週) 매주
month 달마다 월 (月) 매월
year 해마다 년 (年) 매년

Hi Amanda, thanks for your comments on my site. I'm very impressed with your dedication to learning Korean, seems like you have some good study methods, especially keeping this online notebook (which you've inspired me to start).

As for my methods, I don't really have methods as such which is probably part of the problem. I have worked through a few textbooks but mainly I try and just stay curious about everything going on around me (not difficult) and often look stuff up in dictionaries and what not. Actually the best thing I've got recently was a vocabulary book called 2000 essential words for Korean, it's quite fantastic.

The reason I chose this post to comment on was because i was interested in it and the post before it in this category. It's something that confuses me too, why can't they just use the same word for 'next' or 'before' like we do. I also have noticed my Korean girlfriend says '매날' instead of '매일'. Perhaps this is an exception to the rule or it's just something that has come into colloquial speech. I'm sure you may have heard it too.
