What are these called? Transitive and intransitive verbs? I really have no clue. In any case, they've always confused me. Someone at Lang-8 wrote this to me (emphasis mine). WOW, this makes SO much more sense after what she wrote!:

Let me show you one form applied to other expressions.
The difference between 내다 and 나다

‘~ 내다’ is close to ‘to put out, bring out, pull out’ and always require a person subject.

‘~나다’ is close to ‘ to happen, come about, rise’ and doesn’t always require a person subject.

- 불을 내다 to cause a fire 불이 나다 a fire breaks out
- 화를 내다 to get angry with someone and EXPRESS the anger 화가 나다 just get angry with someone and it can not be expressed.
- 짜증 내다 [same with 화] 짜증 나다
- 혼내다 to scold (someone) 혼나다 to be scolded (by someone)
- 끝내다 to complete, make something finished 끝나다 to finish, be finished (subject should be a thing)
- 땀내다 to work up a sweat 땀나다 the sweat comes out (from someone)
- 소문내다 to spread a rumor 소문나다 a rumor is spread (by someone)
